These two teams have been apart for barely a month but lock horns again as England's international season makes its earliest ever start. Some players, most notably Chris Gayle, have only just made it back from the IPL as Test cricket struggles to show it still remains a top priority. This short series certainly feels unloved at the moment, as everyone waits for the main action of the summer to begin.

Yet, for England it is a vitally important contest as they search for that elusive momentum to carry forward. They start favourites but it shouldn't be forgotten that they handed back the Wisden Trophy with their 1-0 defeat in the Caribbean. A fresh-looking team will take the field with a new No. 3 and the possibility of two debutant seamers for the first time since 1993 as Andy Flower makes his presence felt. But after the upheavals of the last 12 months England are still playing catch-up as they try to work out their best combination.

West Indies, though, have struggled in the early stages of the tour and head into the Test on the back of a 10-wicket warm-up defeat against England Lions. The batting has been especially unconvincing and it still isn't clear who Gayle will open with. At least in Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards they have two quicks who can seriously trouble England, although they will have to shed some of their sweaters to bowl at full speed.

Inzamam believed that Australia were beatable this time.

Pakistan lost the series after suffering defeat in the fourth one-dayer, which gave the Australians an unassailable 3-1 lead in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"I am disappointed"

"The Australian side we played in 2005 and the one in the 2007 World Cup were far stronger than the one playing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. That is why I am disappointed we did not defeat them in the series," he said.

The former captain, who played 378 one-day internationals and 120 Tests before retiring in 2007, said Pakistan squandered a good opportunity to beat the Australians.

"On paper we were a better and stronger side than them and we should have defeated them. But I think the Australians got to us with their better planning and application on pitches on which we are more used to playing.

"I am surprised because Australia lost to India and South Africa before this series even with Ricky Ponting and their other leading players who are not playing in this series," he added.

Inzamam said there was lack of focus and application from the batsmen and felt that captain Younis Khan needed to lead with example.

Younis is a good captain, says Inzy

"I think the batting more than the bowling let us down. I don't see any indications they are problems in the team and Younis is a good captain. So I remain hopeful things will get better and we will learn a lot from this series," Inzamam said.

He said Pakistan need to prepare a new cricket strategy and think about giving some of the Indian cricket League players a chance to play for the country again.

"If some of the ICL players return it will strengthen the team and we will have a good chance of winning the Twenty20 World Cup."

He pointed out that the team management needed to do some research on why none of the Pakistani batsmen had got going against Australia even on slow pitches.

Pakistan manager Yawar Saeed said that Afridi had undergone MRI scans and the reports were awaited.

"But he is in pain and it seems unlikely he will be able to play. He has strained his calf muscle during the fourth one-dayer against Australia on Friday," he said.

Pakistan, who have already lost the series against Australia, desperately need a win to at least ensure a respectable scoreline of 2-3 in the five-match series.

Afridi has been Pakistan's best player in the series averaging 27 with the bat and having taken 10 wickets, the highest by any bowler in the series.

The Pakistan all-rounder claimed career-best figures of six for 38 as Australia could only manage a paltry 168 in an innings that lasted just 38.5 overs in their opening one-day international.

The world champions again lost their way in the middle overs, losing eight for 27 at one stage as they wilted against Afridi's spin.
