The second leg of the New Zealand expectations all round effective Friday, when the two teams meet again. The Indian superstars, the world Twenty20 champions, will be under pressure to

put up a performance in our status. The New Zealand bowlers will be under pressure to give the home as Daniel Vettori put it.
In either case, there's little time to relish a win or pick up the pieces after a loss. Even before the match presentations had ended last night, the groundsmen had started taking out the portable pitch - there's a rugby game scheduled at the AMI Stadium on Friday. The day after a late game there wasn't enough time for the teams to travel to the Westpac Stadium here and check the conditions. New Zealand practised at the Basin Reserve, Wellington's Test ground, soon after landing, and India gave training a miss.
And all this for three hours' cricket. Twenty20 games can be a bit like a Christchurch- For India it will be more of a mental check-in before they go in to try and save the series. The first question will be, do they play an extra specialist bowler? The ease with which Irfan Pathan was taken for runs on Wednesday could outweigh his value as a batsman.

in a city where nearly every conversation involves talk of hosting next year's FIFA World Cup, it would be reasonable if cricket was on the backburner. But this is not just any series. For South Africa, this is the big one.

South African fans stay up until all hours watching their side's extraordinary series win in Australia and now comes the chance to see their boys self-effacing the Australians first-hand. That's the plan, anyway.

There is more than a series victory on the line. either side takes the prize, also takes the No. 1 Test ranking, which has been held by Australia for all but a five-month period in 2003 when the South Africans briefly owned it. Locals say there hasn't been this much hype for a home series since Australia's first post-apartheid visit in 1993-94 and the Wanderers is hoping to attract record crowds.

"It's great. It's obviously fantastic to have the hype and to see cricket in such a good light in the country and in general the feel around the country is terrific," South Africa's captain Graeme Smith said. "People coming to the stadium is a bonus for us. It's a real energy booster."

India Tour New Zealand

Two days before the first Twenty20 international, New Zealand assembled for what is perhaps their most important summer - or what passes off as summer in these parts - of cricket in recent times. And already they sound in awe of playing what they reckon to be the best side in the world across all forms in a series that will earn New Zealand cricket almost as much money in 45 days from TV rights as rugby, the No. 1 sport by a long margin, does in a year. Listening to coach Andy Moles and batting mainstay Ross Taylor might make the series sound a like hopeless mismatch but they know it will take India time to adjust to conditions and that will be the chance to hurt them.

New Zealand also carry some confidence having pushed Australia to the limit in the Chappell-Hadlee Series in Australia but Moles conceded they missed a trick there. "Having gone 2-0 up in Australia, the feeling in the camp was pretty good," Moles said. "We probably just stood back a little bit, and waited for the Australians to give us an opportunity to win the game. We need to be proactive and go out and win the games against the Indians, who are probably the No. 1 side in the world."

Younis Khan unbeaten on 149 Runs

Sri Lankan coach Trevor Bayliss is confident of Sri Lanka pulling off a victory against Pakistan in the first Test, though Pakistan's captain Younis Khan, unbeaten on 149, says his plan of forcing a draw is working so far. Despite Younis Khan's century on the third day, the visitors are ahead by 348 runs with Pakistan having lost three wickets.

"I think only one team can win the game and that's us. Obviously, we have to play good cricket and take some wickets tomorrow morning. The longer they bat tomorrow, the more likely a draw becomes," Bayliss said.

He was also pleased with Ajantha Mendis' return of form after an ordinary one-day home series against India. "I thought he bowled very well," he said. "The Indians batted well against him and I think he has learnt from that. His line and length is much better than in the last one month or two. He certainly looks like more Ajantha Mendis we saw seven eight months ago."
